As our boy gets bigger, we definitely noticed a massive reduction in our packing list. For a 2 weeks holiday we managed to fly with only 2 luggages (with plenty of room left) and zero hand carry. We packed Berlin’s daily necessities into a small backpack, which also carries our camera gear. Travelling light makes it so much easier moving between cities and allow us to go through airports quicker.
When Berlin was 2.5 year old, we visited Nepal and Sri Lanka. Since both countries are classified as “developing”, we had to be a bit more prepared with bringing in 2 weeks’ worth of long life milk and nappies. At this stage our son was not quite toilet trained yet. So although nappies take a lot of space in the luggage, they are not that heavy. We didn’t want to risk buying local brand of nappies that Berlin may have a skin reaction to, and the same goes for his daily dose of milk. There were not many supermarkets we came across, let alone 7 Eleven type convenience stores. So bringing his favourite biscuits and snacks from home came real handy this time around.
By this stage, Berlin was already too big for his portacot. So we elect to organize extra bed from the hotels we stayed at. Extra bed charges are usually stated on booking websites such Booking.com. If it is not, best to message the hotel directly to confirm the costs. Never assume hotels give complimentary extra beds!
Since Berlin had passed his teething stage, we didn’t have to worry about bringing in bibs and teething gels. We brought our usual must bring medications though along with additional ones in case of gastro and allergies. Mosquitos were another thing we has to watch out for, but the combination of Lafe’s organic insect repellent along with the Parakito bands worked like magic. Berlin did not get a single bite in both trips! Tara wasn’t so lucky; she had 16 mozzie bites (Yup we counted) in Sri Lanka.
In both these trips we no longer use our previously loved Ergobaby and Tula carriers. Instead we opted for the backpack child carrier by MacPac. This backpack style carrier was great for us as we did a fair bit of climbing and hiking. Berlin sits rather high just above our head which allows him to take in the views as well. There’s a fair bit of gap between his chest and our back which allows for good ventilation.
