Mostar – Bosnia and Herzegovina – is a great day trip destination when holidaying in Croatia. Reachable within 2.5 hours drive from either Split or Dubrovnik, your family can spend an easy day exploring this beautiful town.
During your Bosnia daytrip we recommend that you to also visit other popular places near Mostar including Kravice waterfalls, Blagaj dervish monastery and medieval Ottoman town of Pocitelj.
Here is Letsgobeartravel’s guide on How to Spend One Day visiting Mostar Bosnia:
The Stari Most (Old Bridge)
This super famous 16th century bridge is the symbol of Mostar. Many tourists visit Bosnia because of this bridge (including us!). Destroyed during the Bosnian war Stari Most was rebuilt in 2004.
In the afternoons watch local daredevils dive from the bridge into the Neretva river below. That is after they have collected enough tips from tourists and bystanders.
See how – just before the big jump – the “younger good looking” jumper (who collects tips from tourists) is quickly replaced by a more senior (the real) jumper. Great marketing strategy I suppose 😅
To see a different angle of Stari Most, walk down to the riverbank below. Our boys loved stacking and throwing the rocks into the river. You can also hire a boat for a cruise here.
Enjoy a long lunch with a view
We had one of the most memorable lunches at Urban Grill. Grab a seat on terrace where you have gorgeous views of the river and the Old Bridge. The generous portions here along with excellent service makes Urban Grill a highly ranked restaurant in Mostar.
Shopping at the old Bazaar
The old bazaar originated in the 16th Century. Stretching across both sides of the Mostar Bridge the unique shops sell mainly local crafts, rugs, trinkets, hand painted lamps and traditional sweets.
Drink traditional Bosnian coffee
Tucked in a little corner of the Old Town is Café de Alma.
They only serve one style of coffee here; the most authentic Bosnian coffee prepared in a traditional way. The coffee also came with a Turkish delight which makes a perfect afternoon pick me up for travelling parents like us.
Climb the minaret of Koskin Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque
This Mosque is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Mostar and its minaret is visible across the city. For a small fee, you can visit the Mosque and climb the spiral staircase to the top of the minaret for panoramic view of the city.
Stop by Kravice Waterfalls
About 40 km south of Mostar, it is known as the Niagara Falls of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stretching over 100m, the cascading Kravice Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the country.
It’s emerald green pool is a popular swimming spot in summer time. Outside of the season, you can rent a boat to get up close to the waterfalls.
Visit Blagaj & Pocitelj
The picturesque Blagaj is only 15 minutes’ drive from Mostar and is the home to the 16th Century Dervish Monastery. It sits at the base of a cliff along the Buna River. This place is lined up with restaurants, all serving (strong Bosnian) coffee with a view.
The 14th century town of Pocitelj was an important medieval and Ottoman hub. The small town consists of stone buildings, fortified walls, a fort, a bell tower, and a mosque. Our boys loved wandering through the cobbled streets and cat spotting.
