We have posted about many family travel destinations, but never of our own hometown Perth – until now! Perth Western Australia has lots of beautiful family friendly parks with amazing kids’ playgrounds. Combine these with our pleasant year round weather and you’re set for a relaxing family day out.
If you’re planning to holiday in Perth with your kids, we highly recommend dropping by these playgrounds:
Kings Park and Botanic Garden – May Drive Parkland
If you only have time to visit one park, then Kings Park is your must visit. Located less than 5 minutes to the west of Perth city, this place is BIG! It is even bigger than New York’s central park. Start by taking photos of picture perfect views at the tourists visited Fraser Avenue precinct.
From there enjoy a walking trail along WA botanic garden area where you will see the water garden, Federation walkway treetop walk and Pioneer women’s memorial lake area. Download the visitor map here.
Kids will be spoilt to choose from 4 different play areas. Kings Park’s best and biggest playground is May Drive Parkland. Designed for kids 6 years and above, this dedicated family area has an island fort, elevated walkways and dinosaur replicas. In summer months you can catch a movie at the Moonlight Outdoor Movie Cinema. Check out the schedules here.
May Drive Parkland is on the western side of Kings Park – away from Fraser Avenue precinct. Come here by car via Saw Avenue or Poole Avenue.
Nearby cafe: Zamia cafe –good food, though it is a bit pricey.
South Perth Esplanade
If you’re planning to visit Perth Zoo, you can take the ferry from Elizabeth quay to South Perth (Mends Street jetty). There are a selection of 3 riverside playgrounds dotted along the South Perth esplanade between Mends Street and Coode Street.
Views of Perth city gets better as you walk east towards Coode Street jetty. Try to spot Western Australia’s famous black swan as you’re having a relaxing stroll along the esplanade.
Nearby cafe: various selection available along Mends Street (our favourite is Dolce & Salato)
Hyde Park
Another centrally located park you can easily visit if you’re family holidaying in Perth city is Hyde Park. Autumn is our favourite time to visit this park which has huge plane trees and two small lakes.
The main playground resembles a castle and will suit kids of all ages. In summer, don’t miss the water playground. Covered under shade sails, kids will love playing in the splash area which has lots of water jets, water tipping buckets and spray guns.
On weekends this park will be busy with locals.
Hyde Park is located on the corner of Vincent and Throssell Street, North Perth.
Nearby famous local patisserie: Chu’s Bakery
Optus Stadium precinct
If you’re planning to stay in Crown Towers Perth then your kids will have a selection of 3 playgrounds right in front of your door step!
All dotted along the Swan River, your kids can play at the Sensory Playground (just outside Optus Stadium near Matagarup bridge), Chevron Parkland (a bit further north) or Burswood Park playground (design for younger kids – closer to Crown Metropol Perth).
Each of the playgrounds are decent size but not big. Hotel guests can hire a bike to ride along the river or simply enjoy a relaxing morning walk.
Heathcote Reserve – Applecross
Located 15 minutes south of Perth city, this is the first of our recommended locals’ playground. At Heathcote you will find the famous Pirate’s playground. Walk around the reserve and you will be greeted with panoramic views of Perth city.
Nearby restaurant: BWG Steakhouse (fine dining) and canteen area near playground
Bibra Lake Regional Playground
There are playgrounds, and then there are SUPER PLAYGROUNDS! This place is definitely the latter. Designed to keep toddlers to bigger kids happy for hours, it covers 7,000 sqm of space!
If you’re planning to visit Fremantle with the kids, consider dropping by this playground as a side visit.
Nearby cafe: food trucks on weekends
Whiteman Park – Pia’s Place nature playscape
Want to see Australian wildlife animals like Koalas, Kangaroos and Wombats? Then the best place to visit is Caversham Wildlife Park. If you do plan on going, spare some time visiting the nearby village and playgrounds including: Pia’s Place nature playspace. A new addition to Whiteman Park’s smaller playgrounds, Pia’s Place will suit kids of ALL ages. This massive nature based play space has many highlights, but no doubt the 13m high lighthouse slide is every kid’s favourite.
Pia’s Place can be reached by hopping on Whiteman Park’s tram, or by driving.
Nearby cafe: go to the Whiteman Park Village area
Parks and playgrounds mentioned above all have barbeque facilities, public toilet, water fountains and mostly free parking area.
