You don’t have to give up your preferred family travel destinations just because it doesn’t have special attractions for children. It is still possible to entertain children in a more culturally enriching destinations. Children see so much excitement and curiosity in simple things that may otherwise be boring to us adults. With their imaginative and creative minds, they will find ways to amuse themselves.
When visiting a holiday destination that hasn’t got many children attractions, here are some ways to keep them entertained along the way:
Find a Local Park
If you can find one with a nice playground it will be ideal. Otherwise a big outdoor space for children to run around will be just as nice. You will also likely to get the chance to meet other local families.
Water Time
On sunny days, the beach or swimming pool will always be a winner. Pick family friendly beaches and bring along some beach toys. Some hotels have a dedicated children’s pool which allows them to sit and play with the water fountains. In our recent stay at Novotel Benoa Bali, our son was obsessed with collecting frangipanis flowers that have fallen off the tree. It became a game to us to collect as many as possible.
Toy Store to the Rescue!
Any kid would happily explore a toy shop. Don’t forget to use the “I will bring you to the toy shop if you’re good” strategy to your advantage. Just make sure you can get your child out of the shop without buying too much!
People watching
When Tara and Alfred were busy taking photos or reading up history in tourist sites, Berlin would happily sit back and people watch. Like most children, Berlin is very curious. Especially when he knows he is in some distant exotic land. He liked observing anyone from street performers, people at the markets, locals chatting and wondering around doing their daily activities.
At the Hotel
Ideally book a family friendly hotel that comes with children’s amenities such as kids club, playground or a games room. These amenities are very common in South East Asian destinations such as Thailand and Bali. Rearranging a few pillows can also create a cave to sleep in or race track.
Bubble bath time
Having a bath is a good opportunity to have some fun in the comfort of your hotel room. Baths can be incredibly entertaining on their own. If baths are not something you do on a regular basis back home, then this will absolutely special for all of you. You can also use hotel bathroom supplies for a game of float and sink.
Toiletry Bowling!
Grab all the hotel toiletries from the bathroom (or ask for more from housekeeping). Stack them like bowling pins in the middle of floor. Use a new roll of toilet paper as your ball replacement.
Running around the Hotel grounds
If your hotel has a backyard or green area, play some game with your child. We normally play chase or hide and seek with our son, and this will entertain for a good half hour.
Order Room Service
Depending on which country you are visiting, room service may just be affordable. Part of family travel experience is trying local food. Order something off the menu that you’ve never tried before.
Watch Ipad
We’re not big fans of the electronic gadget use during family holidays. This should only be used to entertain kids when you have run out of other options. Watch pre downloaded movies or stream online using your free WiFi.
