We are sometimes asked “Are you not concerned that travelling is dangerous for your child?” Our answer is “Of course we are”. No parent will want to put their children through unnecessary danger for the sake of family travel.

However travelling with your little ones is safe and there are countless destinations to choose from. To put your mind at ease, there are websites you can look up such as www.smarttraveller.gov.au . It provide handy and updated advice on travel safety. Even in the safest destination there will be good parts and bad parts of town. So stick to the safe family friendly areas.

As an example for as long as we can remember travel advice for Bali and Indonesia is always: High degree of caution. Yet each year thousands of families, from all over the world have a wonderful time visiting. Many of our friends even choose to live there.

Just like if you are concerned with you child getting sick, do you then keep them at home all the time?

If you are concerned with your child getting hurt in school, do you then stop educating them?

The same goes with travelling

At the end of the day it is impossible to predict where things like terrorist attacks may happen next. The more you travel, the smarter you will be with family travel safety. Your safety concerns will be replaced by more practical matters, like whether you have remembered to pack all the daily travel essentials and what awesome things you can do while they nap.

Do remember to always practice basic family travel safety such as not bringing excessive cash, keep an eye on your kids all the time and not stopping in the middle of a busy street looking for directions.

Finally, it is interesting to note that the biggest risk facing travelling families is not terrorism, getting robbed, airplane accident or even child abduction. By far the biggest danger facing travellers is: road safety.
